Business model

Built on scale, credit and direct delivery

We buy fertilizer in bulk from global suppliers and arrange delivery straight to our customers’ warehouses in Africa, so our customers get the right price and the product arrives where it is needed.

The supply chain

We manage the trade. The product goes straight to you.

Contracts, pricing and delivery instructions go through Lyambai in Dubai, while the fertilizer travels directly from the supplier to the customer’s warehouse.

Physical delivery: fertilizer moves directly from the supplier to the customer’s warehouse on DDU terms. When supply is short, Lyambai buys locally from Agricorp Multicrop Zambia in Lusaka.

Step by step

How a Lyambai trade works

  1. Read the market

We draw on market intelligence from our key stakeholders and share it with customers, helping them predict demand and order at the best price available.

  2. Buy in bulk on supplier credit

We buy large quantities from manufacturers and wholesalers. Our major suppliers extend credit facilities for volume purchases.

  3. Allocate to customers

We sell the product over time to distributors and retail companies based on each customer’s intake, and tell the supplier where to deliver and in what quantities.

  4. Deliver DDU to the warehouse

The supplier delivers directly to the customer’s warehouse on DDU terms, with freight included in the purchase price.

  5. Cover urgent shortages locally

When supply is tight, we buy locally from Agricorp Multicrop in Zambia to meet urgent requirements.

Why DDU

Lessons learned from managing freight ourselves

When we started in 2013, we arranged every shipment from supplier to customer ourselves, and volatile shipping costs ate into our margins.

So we changed the model. Delivery is now included in the purchase price on DDU terms, and our large suppliers deliver directly to our customers’ warehouses. That lets us concentrate on what we do best: pricing, sales and customer relationships.

The risk we carry

Lyambai DMCC carries the risk of its purchase cost moving against the market, so our customers don’t have to.

DDU

Delivered Duty Unpaid

A delivery term under which the seller is responsible for the goods until they reach the buyer’s named destination.

  • The supplier is responsible for safe delivery all the way to the customer’s warehouse
  • Freight is included in the price, so there are no surprise shipping costs
  • Lyambai tells the supplier where to deliver and how much goes to each customer
  • Import duties and clearance stay with the buyer, as DDU terms specify
